Do I need a starter with this much harvested yeast?

Yes, it is an expensive one. It is a heavy double, not quite a triple. Yes, I have fermentation temp control. No on oxygenation, though I do get a lot of froth going during chilling with a stainless wine degasser and heavy whirpool action. I've made similar beers with no issues regarding...

Do I need a starter with this much harvested yeast?

Sorry I omitted some info. This will be for a 5G finished batch, 5.75 into the fermenter as I am accounting for loss due to dry hops and packaging losses. This is for a Mango Milkshake Double IPA with an OG of 1.095.

Do I need a starter with this much harvested yeast?

I am planning on a Double IPA using S-04 yeast I harvested just under a month ago (April 11). The pic shows the amount I have in each pint mason jar (I have 4 of these total still, used one on a prior batch). Should I make a starter or is this sufficient for my needs? I know that part of the...

    DIY Glycol Chiller build

Here's how a guy by the name of Colorado Boy does it commercially with a single pump. In essence, it's done with a manifold loop, controllers and some valves. Overall it's really pretty simple.

Am I the only one who enjoys bottling?

My abhorrence for bottling pushed me into kegging and so far have never looked back. Still have bottling equipment for the occasional bottle but have no plans on bottling full batches.

How much water do I need in total?

Several good calculators out there for free to guide you such as: Brewer's Friend, BrewCipher, Brewgr, BIABCalculator and/or PricelessBrewing if brewing via BIAB...you need to be more specific on HOW you are brewing as each has different requirements (i.e. Extract, all-grain via BIAB, all grain...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Disappointed in my third batch based on the OPs recipe. The first one I did as a single IPA, the second I turned into a double IPA. Both of those were excellent. This last one I went back to a single IPA and actually hit my numbers damn near perfectly. Granted, I brewed it right about 2...

First water report, a little guidance please?

@VikeMan I think I got it pretty close with these additions. Sodium is a bit high but probably okay?

First water report, a little guidance please?

I just got my results from Ward Labs and based on what I've seen from other reports, it seems to be pretty decent, low on most everything. I have started messing with water additions using both Bru N Water (which has circular reference issues in V1.25), BrewCiper and the "Mash Chemistry and...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Do you also keg? If so, take advantage of the free CO2 to purge your keg. Connect a jumper from fermenter to keg and connect your spunding valve to the keg.

7cf freezer 4 kegs on the floor...$229 @ Home Depot.

I was at HD last night where both sat side by side. I did not throw a tape on them, but to me the Vissani looks visually larger inside, and it is for sure slightly taller.

7cf freezer 4 kegs on the floor...$229 @ Home Depot.

I was just looking at those yesterday, also was looking at the Magic Chef HMCF7W4 which has very comparable dimensions and same price.

What kettle size is recommended in BIAB brewing?

If you plan to perform a full volume BIAB, meaning no sparge, then ROT is to have your kettle 3X your finished batch size. As such, I recently moved from a 10G kettle to a 15G and find it to be the proper size with enough extra to not be worried about boil over. This is for 5G finished...

    water profile/water adjustment

Kinda in the market for a pH meter, but have not had one before. I used to have a pool and hot-tub, used a good chemical kit for all the tests so am very familiar with that process. Is there an equivalent process for wort, just using test chemicals (NOT the crappy strips)? I assume not since...

Anyone else overwelmed by the amount of hops in IPAs and NEIPAs?

I am originally from WA state where westcoast IPAs abound. I honestly cannot stand a lot of them as I do not prefer the overwhelming harsh bitterness that seems to dominate that style. As such, I quit drinking anything that said IPA for many years as I associated the harshness to every IPA. I...

    water profile/water adjustment

Another simple response is, get a test from Ward Labs so you have a starting point.

    SS Convoluted Counterflow Wort Chiller?

The difference is significantly greater than you think. Copper is generally around 400, SS is less than 20 depending on the alloy. Here is one reference: Heat Exchangers: Copper vs. Stainless Steel - AccuServ Heating and Air Conditioning

First neipa, ever need feed back

You gotta start somewhere and the recipe looks pretty decent. I've only made a couple of these but have followed the above mentioned thread and have a good recipe now. For a 5G packaged volume, I use a total of 1 oz. of Warrior as my initial bittering hop, then do 3+2+1 of Citra+Mosaic+Galaxy...
