Ed, I would suggest tettnanger over the cascade. I find cascade to citrusy for the rye. Depends on your tastes I guess.

EdWort said:OK, how does this look. It's a modifed version of Denny Conn's Rye IPA. Thanks to TastyBrew.com recipe calculator. That's one cool tool.
I'm going to use Safale -05 yeast with it so I think it will finish below 1.019.
EdWort said:It came in at 1.064. Not bad. It should finish out at 6.9% abv.
Am I getting some of this?EdWort said:It's now been 4 days after pitching the yeast and the air lock is still bubbling away regularly. I'm guessing the low fermentation temp of 62 degrees has something to do with this.
Nottingham would have finished in 36 hours max at 68 degrees, but I used Safale -05 for this batch.
I'm letting it go two weeks before turning the temp down to crash cool.

My "Rye Not" is enjoying some cold keg time with some french oak chips floating around.
Yeah baby ...niquejim said:Mine is still bubblin away after 4 days @60 and will get some Jack Daniels barrel wood chips for a week or two in secondary.
You will get this.

I recon a Rye IP needs 3-4 months minimum to be taste-worthy.
EdWort said:Anyone ever dry hop with Chinook?
MikeFlynn74 said:hey what wouldbe good to get a nice deep red color?

EdWort said:How did you come with an 8 gallon batch size? 10 gallon kettle?
rbridges01 said:15 gallon kettle..gotta love the ability to do larger batches
EdWort said:Anyone ever dry hop with Chinook?
EdWort said:There ya go. Why not 10 gallons.
EdWort said:OK, Here's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to make a Haus Rye by adding 2# of malted rye to my Haus Ale grain bill and add 1 oz. of Cascade as dry hopped and the first oz. as FWH.

s3n8 said:I am planning an extract rye IPA as my next (5th) batch...
7.5 lbs Pale LME
1 lb Amber DME
1 lb Crystal 120
1 lb Flaked Rye
Steep Crystal and Rye at 155 for 30 - 60 minutes
Havent 100% decided on the hop schedule yet, but I plan on using 2oz Columbus and 2oz Cascade. Was thinking:
1oz Columbus @ 60
1oz Columbus @ 20
1oz Cascade @ 10
1oz Cascade @ 1
Any thoughts on the above? Feedback appreciated.
I dont' know if it's going to be any good, but here's what I did today.
BCB Rye IPA
10# 2 Row Pils
2# Rye
2# Vienna
12 oz. Crystal 60L
8 oz. Flaked Barley
1 oz. Tettnanger FWH 4.4%
1 oz. Chinook 60 min 12%
0.5 oz. Chinook 30 min 12%
0.5 oz. Chinook 5 min 12%
Mashed in at 154 degrees for 70 minutes. Ran off 7 gallons and boiled for 90 minutes. It's chilling right now. I'm going to whirlpool it let it sit and rack clear wort off to the fermenter. Going with hydrated Safale -05.
I think this will be a big beer that will take some aging.

During the second week of dry hopping, I added 1 ounce of oak chips. Smells fantastic. I plan to leave in the keg for 1-2 months, then bottle and stash for another month or two.
Kegged the Rye IPA this morning.
O.G. 1.064
F.G. 1.010
ABV 7.2%
Tastes nice so far. I dropped an ounce of Cascade in a stainless herb ball in the keg.
Next check is in 4 weeks.
