So I made a 2L starter on Thursday. 24 hours later, all went as planed. I had 75G of DME left over and was a little low on my cell count. So I figure I would make a small 750ml starter and have the yeast all revved up for my Sunday brew day. I just got home, Less than 8 hours and BOOM. yeast went nuts. Looks like it's going to be a good fermentation.

Happens to me with most of my 2L starters. After I boil the wort I have about 1600 mL in my 2L flask, and usually by the next morning the bubbles have pushed up to the top. I've picked up the habit of putting paper towels over my stirstarter to help with the mess.

I use a "bottle teck" that's old school.

use a bung with a hole on top of your batch
fit a tube in hole- DO NOT let the tube touch liquid. Keep it just below bung.
place the other end of tube in a wine bottle half full of water
place bottle in a pot

done
this helps whatever you are burping, and catches any burp over. works great!
I always use it to start with my 5 gallon batches
