What do I store in a barrel between batches?

I am getting ready to bottle a bourbon barrel porter that I aged in one of the 5.25 gall barrels from the group buy and am wondering what do do after its empty. Should I clean it out with some hot water to get the portr completely out and then fill it with a little whiskey? I of course want to continue to use it over and over , but I will want to age other beers besides porters in there so I figured there must be some good way to clean and store it.
