I'm getting ready to brew my first all grain batch and I'm a little confused about measuring water volumes. My mash in volume is 3.85 gallons, o.k. what's the best way to go about measuring out .85 of a gallon? Should I pour the 3 gallons in my pot and then convert the .85 to something other than gallons or what?

Just get it close.
3 gallons and 3 quarts and then just a little bit more

This also works, although I have found that I overshoot my mash temps a little and have to stir for longer.

I would use the 4 gals when calculating my mash temp to avoid this problem.

If I was feeling particularly anal-retentive, I'd do three gallons, three quarts and a a pint (aka 3.5 quarts). In real life I would do a scant 4 gallons - or "about 4 gallons". A little too much or a little to little water shouldn't make or break your mash - it's never been an issue for me.
