It's been a bit since I've brewed due to location/time constraints during grad school but I am now finished and pumped to get back into it! I recently moved to Phoenix, bought a house, and building an outdoor kitchen now that I don't have to deal with snow anymore and would love to have beer flowing poolside!
I previously built a 4 tap keezer.....
My original thought was to try and integrate this into my outdoor bar, however a few issues arose during my brainstorming...first being with the keezer opening from the top, I would have to keep pulling it out to load/clean etc. That being said, the next logical step is a under counter kegerator. After some thought and discussion, it seems like having my only kegerator built in to the outdoor kitchen probably wouldn't be the best option, as it would be constantly working to keep cool during the 110+ degree summer days and as I won't entertaining daily, probably don't want to go outside every time I want a beer...As such, I have convinced my wife that it only makes sense (aka I NEED) an indoor and outdoor kegerator, as it wouldn't make sense aesthetically to have a hole in the outdoor bar and wheel a kegerator in and out every time.
So now my plan is to have my keezer inside and buy a kegerator for outside, and just plug in the outdoor kegerator when we plan on using it and transfer the kegs from indoor to outdoor. My first question is, do I really need an outdoor rated, front venting kegerator if its not going to be plugged in long term? I could also leave some space on the sides to provide better ventilation. Seems like both of those aspects really drive the price from ~$500 to well over $1500
Secondly, any recommendations on specific brands for the kegerator?
I've also seen a few used ones for sale...is it worth buying used or is there too big of a worry that they will burn out too fast?
