How is this not in anyone's sig line? :D

Awesome. :mug:

Back on track...

Ok, so plastic dip seems to do a decent job of containing the breakage from a carboy accident. Well and good.

But I propose a test using kitchen plastic wrap as well. The way I see it, several layers of Saran Wrap would help prevent flying shards as well. It might not do quite as good as the plastic dip, but the point is to contain the glass as much as possible, and I think that plastic wrap would certainly help keep the glass from exploding and cutting.

It would be cheap and easy to apply at time of use. It could also be used to hold a thermometer against the carboy if you were taking temp readings. It's a non-permanent solution, of course.

Basically it's like wrapping pallets of boxes at the shipping dock. Several thin layers applied fairly tight ought to help hold the glass in place, and it can hardly cut if the edges are not exposed.

How about some of that Tyvek heat shrink wrap? I've seen that used to shrink wrap very large items like boats amd RV's for storage and such. I don't know if you could use multiple layers or not, but seems like you could. It would be very inexpensive per car boy, but buying a roll of that stuff may be costly. Could be hard to find in small quantities.

I think this is a perfect solution for someone like myself who already has 3 (remaining, already lost one) carboys that are currently in the attic collecting dust. This will give me more confidence in using them. If you already have them whats another $14-15 to save an ER bill and more importantly, the use of your hand(s). I guarantee you couldn't put a "non-protected" carboy in a box and hit it with a hammer and it not break. No matter what your swing limitations are.

OP, thanks very much for taking the time and sacrificing a carboy to try this.

I'm not the OP of this thread, but I did kinda steal it by sacrificing a carboy to the glass carboy gods. To you Yambor, and to all the others who thanked me, or will thank me in the future, you're welcome. Though I didn't sacrifice the carboy for anyone else's benefit per se, (I did it for my own piece of mind) if it prevents someone else from making a trip to the ER, then it was well worth it.

I actually didn't sacrifice a carboy, homebeerbrewer did. But I will take credit for starting the idea, most great ideas are refined through collaboration :tank: thanks to everyone else who gave input also.

I'd be glad to do this test if you would like to donate a carboy. I don't have any sacrificial carboys left.

Anyone think these coatings will hold up in an ice bath? Here in Texas that's the only way I can brew in the summer. I've currently got 2 glass primaries soaking going on 3 weeks at this point...And of course by ice bath I mean chilling the water to the proper ale yeast fermentation temp, 68F or whatever...

I didn't try wetting the outside until the test was complete, and even then, the coating remained mostly intact. I'd say from my experience that water won't have much affect on it.

Hound Dog said that the edge started peeling after getting it wet, but if you keep the water level below the plastic line, I'd think that you would be safe. But then again, I didn't test that idea yet.

I've seen U-Line package sealing tape used similarly by the R/C Aircraft guys to cover the wings of some of their planes. They apply it and use heat guns to shrink it. The package tape is pretty ordinary stuff, not specifically intended to be heat shrunk. The planes I saw it used on were Flying Wing designs made of semi rigid foam. Multiple layers of the tape might be a cheap and effective alternative. Seems like it would be relatively durable too.

I have done this to my flying wings. This method is no longer the 'state of the art' for covering foam wing designs. Heating the tape with a heat gun is a tricky proposition and takes some practice. The difference between actually heat-shrinking the tape and burning a hole in it is razor thin. This tape also is super thin and easy to 'burst'. I would choose fiber re-inforced packing tape or the clear duct tape I linked earlier.

That said, the photo evidence for the dip/spray on rubber is somewhat compelling.

Yeah, I saw it used on some Boomerang Combat Wings long ago. I haven't been around that hobby for a long time. Tell me, what is the "state of the art" these days for covering the foamies? I'm just curious as to what they are currently using that is better.

I thought that heat shrinking the tape was rather forgiving. I was not aware that it was so easy to burn thorugh. It didn't look that difficult in the demonstration I watched.

The amount of heat required to shrink heat tube is not excessive, and I'm sure if the carboy was full of warm water you could apply the heat evenly with a space heater. Where to find shrink tube that size, I dunno.

What do you think about car window tint , or vinyl , would look allot better. or for a rustic look a leather carboy sleeve.

I use glass because there is more... class to it in my opinion. I've got my glass carboys sitting in the plastic buckets though. I acquired the glass carboys from my grandfather. I now have 3 of those beauties. After I break my first one if that ever happens I'll sarin wrap the rest. However I take good care of the carboys and hardly move them at all

Let's not get carried away now...

Sarin, also known by its NATO designation of GB, is an extremely toxic substance whose sole application is as a nerve agent. As a chemical weapon, it is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the United Nations in UN Resolution 687.

Saran is the trade name for a number of polymers made from vinylidene chloride (especially polyvinylidene chloride or PVDC), along with other monomers. The main advantage of Saran film is a very low permeability to water vapor, flavor and aroma molecules, and oxygen compared to other plastics. The barrier to oxygen prevents food spoilage, and the barrier to flavor and aroma molecules helps food retain its flavor and aroma.

Sarin vs. Saran is an acceptable typo. Now if he'd written VX instead of saran... :p

I intend to buy a few cans of the plastidip and cover my 3 5 gallon carboys. My 7.5 gallon is sealed in styrofoam so I shouldn't have an issue there. I just wish I had an easier way to transport it.
That being said, my plan is to make four clear vertical stripes for viewing and a clear bottom for cleaning and to make the rest opaque to keep out light. I am also considering getting stick on temperature strips and putting those on with clear plastidip over them.
To homebeerbrewer: How easy was it to control the spray of the plastidip? Much like spray paint? Also, would you think, given what you saw, that more/thicker plastidip is better?

Geoffington, I somehow missed your question. Yes, it's just like spraying with paint. You do get some overspray. As for thicker vs thinner, the sacrificial carboy was painted with a sponge brush, which I believe was thicker than the spray. The spray is much more uniform in thickness though, and I think that it looks better. I don't want to test it, but I'm hoping that the spray does the same job as the brushed.

The test can of Plisti Dip was a 14 oz can, and the spray was 12 oz. I used the whole can on the test subject, and a whole can of the spray on the finished carboys. I doubt that two ounces makes that big of a difference.

I think the Plasti-dip is an awesome idea. +1 to anything that will help keep damage at a minimum. I will be looking into doing this to the remaining glass carboys I have & likely also purchase a BB or two. Thanks for your research & resourceful thinking!

I'd be really interested to see how duct tape would hold up in this scenario. It's waterproof (the Mythbuster guys actually made a pretty successful duct tape sailboat) and we all know it's very durable. I would be willing to bet that, if properly wrapped, you wouldn't lose any shards, and the leaking would be so minimal that clean up would be a breeze. It would likely even help with grip stability.

The only problem is that I don't think a duct taped carboy would not be nearly as attractive.

I have a can of Herculiner lying around. It's a DIY truck bed liner.
They painted the bed of a Toyota Hilux with it on Smashlab and detonated a decent sized bomb. The truck survived, and would have been quite repairavble.
I think I'll do my carboys with it.
I will not test it, as I can't even afford ingredients to brew right now.
I was also thinking, if someone had the inclination, that carbon fiber and resin would make it nigh indestructible.

Toyota's are pretty indestructible as they are. I've tried cartwheeling one down the side of a mountain once. If it wasn't for the radiator being pushed into the firewall, I think I could have drove it back up.
