All,

any ideas on where i can pick up a thermowell to fit the above digital controller? possibly get the materials to fab one up?

what is the major diameter of the sensor? I think it's .250, but not sure from my notes.
What are you putting the thermowell in? IOW how long do you want the thermowell?

I use this 16" one in my 6.5 gal tall buckets.

ID of that one is advertised as .305"

They sell them in 12 ~ 24" long.

I like this style best of what i have seen due to way they seal the end

The sensor is .224" so my guess some long copper or stainless tube the 15" would do the trick

Making your own if you can close seal the one end in a sanitary fashion that has no nooks and crannies for crap to grow is an option..

And While I could make a thermowell from SS tube and a solid piece machined to fit and seal closed end... at the buy in cost of $12.00 for the one linked above... it's not worth my time to make.

Oops! I went out to the hardware store and purchased a copper pipe, 1/8" a few caps and soldered them together. I now have a tube, but I'm reluctant to stick it in the drink just yet.

What do you all think, any thoughts on sanitation?

Polish the tube and fittings, soak in starsan.. I would think you'd be ok on sanitation... as long as the fittings are air tight and there are no pockets in the solder (so they should be a good fillet joint http://www.copper.org/applications/plumbing/techcorner/images/aws_3trule3.jpg )

Now long term wort / beer contact with the type of copper and solder you used??? No idea..

I'm no plumber, but I made an informed decision. I used L type copper that was rated for domestic water. figure that something that would deliver water to my tap on the sink should be okay in beer, properly sanitized. The solder was lead free (as my father had 50% silver / 50% lead solder, I bought a new spool)

As far as testing, I placed the end of the tube in some water, as shown above, over night. I will be checking it later for issues. I may apply a vacuum test, but that is overkill.
