I have been intrigued by Special B malt for a long time now, but never had a recipe that called for it. When I looked up the description/flavor of Special B I immediately thought it would be perfect for a low roast brown ale. This was my first homemade recipe for a brown ale:
OG: 1.055
FG: 1.015
IBU: 24.3
Color: 19.3
Grain
9 lbs 2 row Canadian
1 lb Special B
4 oz Pale Chocolate
Hops
.5 oz Challenger 60 min
.5 oz Willamette 15 min
5 oz Challenger 15 min
.5 oz Willamette 0 min
US-05 yeast (@ 68)
Mash for an hour at 152
I actually Ran out of propane ~20-30 min. into my boil (Luckily there is a lowe's across the street), so some of the numbers may be slightly off.
It has been bottled and been carbing for 2 weeks. opened up the first to taste test, and was very pleased. Slight fruity nutty flavor with a mild roast finish, needs to carb more though.
