I came up with this recipe as a close clone for Summit's Horizon Red Ale. If you have had it let me know if you think this is close for a recipe you would use. Check out their beer specs on the site for more info. www.summitbrewing.com If you haven't had it, it's a hoppy but not too in your face IPA with a dark ruby color. The hops are pronounced but not over the top and it's balanced by a caramel malty taste. Let me know what you think if I can come close with this.

I certainly think this brew is dry hopped: Here is what I came up with using your recipe as a template, I think using caramel 10 like a base malt might be a little much but I am not sure. :

Sorry to revive this old thread...just wondering if either of you (or anyone for that matter) has brewed either of these recipes. I'm thinking of taking a crack at it to see if it's close to Horizon Red. What a great beer!! Summit's best, hands down!

Kace,
I have reformulated both of these recipes and brewed it back in October. It turned out really well. I have since tweaked it some more and plan on brewing it again in a month or so. I will give you the latest version which I think should bring it really close to Summit's Version

I used Nottingham Dry Yeast because I feel like Summit's house yeast is closer to an English Yeast than something like American Ale yeast. This gives it a little more fruity taste. You could probably use Wyeast 1272 or WLP051 too which would give pretty good clone. I fermented at 65 with it. Let me know how it turns out if you try it. Maybe together we can get it perfect. It is a fantastic beer.

Thanks for the update! Horizon Red with no Horizon hops? What made you decide against the original hop lineup?

I left out Horizon and Summit because my LHBS did not carry them when I first brewed it so I substituted. Maybe this next time I will have to order some and tweak it a bit to include them.
