Hello all,

I'm new to this web site and 1 year into home brewing.

So far I've had great success and am loving it.

I have quickly went from kits to all grain, the first being an english ale and I just bottled a holiday spice ale.

Although I am set up to grain brew, I am wondering if anyone has tried to steep/mash in their boil pot?

I have a 20 gal ss pot so I could account for absortion and evaporation and start with about 8 gal of water. Bag all my grain, protien rest, mash and drain.

Any thoughts?

Do a search for "brew in a bag" or "biab" Lots of people do it. Basic Brewing Radio has a podcast about it also, check it out on iTunes.

I do 6lb bag stovetop mashes in a SS brewpot. I have great success and get very good efficiencies (I had to dillute my last batch by almost a gallon post boil). You will want a second vessel for sparging to help increase your efficiencies.
