I thought it might be nice to have a thread where people who've already seen the film can discuss it openly without having to worry about spoiling it for other people.
If you haven't seen it yet, and don't want to learn any spoilers, STOP READING NOW.
My wife and I saw it yesterday, I thought it was excellent. My main complaint, if I had to come up with one, has to do with the motivation for the whole plot, really. The whole idea of the map to Luke Skywalker's hidden location. It seemed a little contrived to me.
Why did Luke go into hiding? Because the First Order wanted him dead. That part is easy enough. But where did this map to his location come from? And how come R2-D2 had most of it? Who made the map? Why do they need to bring Luke back in now? What's changed? The First Order is still trying to kill him, so why did the Rebels pick now to go and find him. Presumably, he's only in danger because this map exists, and the First Order was trying to get their hands on it. Which brings me back to my question: Where did this map come from, and who made it? If it had never been made, then Luke could have stayed hidden in seclusion, right? Am I missing something here?
My wife also suggested that Finn might have The Force. She was under the impression that only someone with The Force is able to wield a light saber. I don't recall there being any such restriction.
Also, any speculation on who Rey's parents might be? I thought that The Force was genetic - it stayed within bloodlines. But then my wife reminded me that Jedi are celibate, and thus The Force would die out pretty quickly if it didn't spontaneously manifest in people. Also, Han didn't have the Force, yet it seems pretty strong with his offspring, Kylo Ren. He would have only inherited it from half his parents (Leia).
I think Rey's parents will turn out to be someone familiar to us, someone we've already seen elsewhere in the series. It seems like if it turns out they're just a couple of random people who abandoned her on Jakkuu, it would be a missed opportunity for a dramatic twist in the story. I had half expected her to recognize Luke as her dad at the end, but it seems not.
