For multiple reasons I will be growning hops this year on what will look a whole lot like a clothes line.

How close can the lines of twine be when they are running horizontal?

Figure this is after the well spaced hop plants have grown up twine to the top of the clothes line. I'd like to put the lines as close together as possible without worry of tangling the bines.

Depends.
Are the hop bines the same hop? If so, put the as close as you want.
If different varieties, I'd go at least 3ft. Even then, you'll have to tend to them everyday rewrapping laterals.

It's recommended to grow the same varieties with minimum of 3 ft between same hop bines, and minimum 5 feet between different varieties. Trust me, you should do it that way. After a few years the laterals can grow easily a foot in each direction. And they do.

Bummer. I was hoping to run the lines when they are going horizontal closer together. I'll have to rethink my hop garden
