I know I'm not the only one who has been looking to plant this. The Thyme Garden is now selling it along with some other hard-to-get rhizomes. Looks like they ship anywhere in the US: http://www.thymegarden.com/product/H5115

That's interesting. I thought it was proprietary. I may have to rethink my setup to add it in. Thanks for the link!
 
For east coasters, farmhousebrewingsupply has them also along with a few new varieties for ~$4 each.

I picked some up also, curious to see if they will grow in the north east.

Not one of the protected varieties - the USDA has it in their collection. It has just been impossible to find in the US for home growers. Glad to see it enter the market.
 
I never tried brewing with Sorachi Ace... description of aroma says "lemon and dill". Dill.... really ?!? A beer that taste like a jar of dill pickle.... not sure ! :D

Grab a Sapporo for a taste test. To me, Sorachi Ace has a unique, lemon citrus flavor. Never picked up any hint of dill, but some people do. Here's a better description: http://allgrain.beer/hops/sorachi-ace/

I ordered one, even though there is no room left in the yard. Might try adding it to the breeding program.
 
I think that when a new variety is released (or newly re-released 'old variety'), their flavor and aroma characteristics are determined by a panel made up of a bunch of folks with really good palates that are well trained to identify many particular flavors/aromas. My palate is very weak so I have a hard time recognizing many of the descriptors assigned to a particular hop.

I ended up with a pound of Ace about 8 years ago and what I got from that hop was a general 'pleasant hoppiness' when used late in the brew. When used as a dry-hop, I picked up 'oak'. A local brewpub recently did a session ale a month or so ago (dry hopped with Ace). Of all the people I talked to, none of them picked up the oak except me? Long story short, not everyone tastes and perceives things the same I guess.

I have already tried a Sapporo beer, I didn't know it was made with some Sorachi Ace. Sorachi Ace was developped for Sapporo breweries, but I was under the impression that it has not really been used by them.

Guess I just assumed that they still used it. I can't find any literature on the subject one way, or the other. The only other beer that I've had with it was Brooklyn's Sorachi Ace - which has a great lemon/lemongrass flavor.

So... I received a notification from the Thyme Garden that they were not able to secure the Ace rhizomes after all. However, I did find them at Freshops. Yesterday a good looking rhizome arrived.
