I have one of these and this is for free on a local classified site, could this be used as a secondary or primary for ed's apfelwein. If so what could be used to cover the top

I have one to! Old oil wells are not good as primary or secondary fermenters. Capping it is a problem and OHSA regulations are very expensive to deal with. A salt mine is better but will impart flavors to your beer.
 
I have had a giant balloon filled with lactic acid. Should this still be good to use? Im not sure because sometimes I fall asleep.

Of course the metal lid in the one from the thread (from target) is important for making an airlock grommet space. Can't easily do it with a glass top.
