Added a drain bulkhead fitting and ball valve to my boil kettle. Did a test fire just boiling 5 gal water and it passed with no leaking.

But, the ball valve is not hot at all. I can easily keep my fingers on it without pulling back. In the future I will have hot recirculation so it will take care of itself then.

For now though, how do I try to ensure the ball valve is sanitized before I drain cooled wort though it?

If you heat your strike water in the boil kettle when you run that out to the mash tun it'll sanitize the ball valve and bulkhead...

Cheers!

I'm doing an extract brew this time so no mash. But, your suggestion does help because I can drain boiling water through it and pour back into the kettle before I put in extract and hops.

DOH! I should have thought of that.
