Is it ok to use a glass carboy as the primary fermenter? I have access to some cheaply. Would save buying a bunch of plastic pails.
 
yeah you can use it. just make sure you have enough headspace so you don't have a mess when it starts fermenting. a 6.5 gallon glass carboy is about right for a 5 gallon batch.
 
Yep if you've got a 5 gallon carboy and no need for a clearing tank like me, just make sure you add a blowoff tube, the wider the better. You might lose a pint of beer or so out of the tube, but it's better than painting the ceiling with the stuff.

Fermcap-S is supposed to make it even less messy.
