Well, I finished my first batch last night at ~9pm. Everything went far smoother than I expected, but I was pretty well prepared. The recipe was a partial boil extract from MWS "Black Dog Pale Ale". I had to wait for my wife to get off work before I could start the malt, but I prepared the 3 gallons of "make-up" water earlier in the day, and had everything sanitized before as well. About 30 minutes before my wife got off work I started steeping the grains (in the house). So when she finally arrived I was ready to add the malt, which I did outside for obvious reasons.
No boil overs, no scorched malt, no suprises. This morning the air lock sounds like a machine gun. So all seems well in mid Missouri this morning.
I've already ordered a 2nd secondary and my brother is bringing over a recipe he wants to try.
