A recipe I'm working on calls for "a top fermenting Northern English Ale strain, like Burtonwood, Twhaites (but not Robinsons)".

Any close matches to this in the White Labs or Wyeast lines?

John

Thanks undallas. I'm checking to see what they have in stock.

Have you used Essex or Nottingham before? Any insight or recommendations?

not I... I have been using either American yeasts, german yeasts, and dry yeasts..
Have not taking a trip to try top fermenting yeast yet.

Essex is more Southern England, being closer to London, and the Nottingham does not really have very much english character. I'd go for more for strains like the following:

WLP023: Burton Ale. From Burton upon Trent [ame=http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=burton+upon+trent,+uk&sll=53.981935,-0.439453&sspn=6.515199,19.775391&ie=UTF8&ll=52.409121,-0.186768&spn=3.217187,9.887695&z=7]burton upon trent, uk - Google Maps[/ame]
WLP026: Premium Bitter. From Staffordshire [ame=http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Staffordshire,+United+Kingdom&sll=52.476089,-0.384521&sspn=3.37295,9.887695&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FdfXJQMdUm_g_w&split=0&ll=52.281602,-1.593018&spn=3.38783,14.0625&z=7&iwloc=A]Staffordshire, United Kingdom - Google Maps[/ame]
WLP038: Manchester (was already said) [ame=http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=manchester,+uk&sll=52.789476,0.428467&sspn=3.189389,9.887695&ie=UTF8&ll=53.455349,-1.241455&spn=3.140385,9.887695&z=7&iwloc=A]manchester, uk - Google Maps[/ame]
WLP037: Yorkshire Square Ale [ame=http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=yorkshire,+uk&sll=53.455349,-1.241455&sspn=3.140385,9.887695&ie=UTF8&ll=52.842595,-0.911865&spn=3.344803,9.887695&z=7]yorkshire, uk - Google Maps[/ame]

I have not used all of these, but I HAVE used the 023, and I love it. I use it for pretty much all my bitters, although I'm looking forward to trying out the 026 and 037 when that season comes around.

Thanks for all of the info.

I've used the Burton Ale strain before on a porter with interesting results. It might make a good choice for the recipe I'm experimenting on now.

What the season on these other specialty strains?
