I think part of it is I didn't choose wisely with regards to my first kit.
My setup came from The Home Brewery and I chose the American Lager kit.
I followed the directions to the letter during the boiling of the wort.
Left it in the primary longer based on what I've read here.
Bottled half, the rest went into a Party Pig. Three weeks later, the bottles carbonated fine, the Pig not so much.
The beer itself, boring.
The first sip as a funky aftertaste, after that it's just plain yawnsville.
I can feel the alcohol though, so I guess that's something.
Batch number two will be bottled Saturday.
Here's hoping for better results.
Cheers:mug:

Hope you like the second better. What is your 2nd batch? Lol yawnsville that about sums up most american lagers in my opinion.

If its a lager, it needs to ferment at cool temps. If you did it at room temp that could contribute to some funky flavors I would think.

cousin Dave, where abouts in NN VA are you?

and I hope your second is better.. It took me a while to not only find one that was good, but that I liked...
The next batch is the beer Northern Brewer got in hot water over.
Three Hearted Ale.

I remember my first batch like it was yesterday. I hadn't researched the first thing and winged the hell out of it. I didn't top the extract wort up to five gallons and only had about 3 gallons. It ended up being so astringent and bitter I had to dump the entire thing. So sounds like you did better than I did.
