Making a Porter... What type of yeast?

Making a Porter but I'm debating using either white labs English ale or white labs pacific ale. Thoughts?

Of the two, I'd go with English ale. I don't like fruity notes in porters.

I've become a big fan of Wyeast 1318 London Ale III lately, it worked fantastic in the porter I made a few weeks back. You can check out my thread here:

depends what kinda porter you're going for. for a brown porter, i'd go english ale all the way. for a robust, american or english yeast will work. i like 1272 in a nice hoppy robust porter, while i prefer the 1098 or 1099 in a more balanced robust porter

edit: yeah, i think the 1318 might be really nice in a porter from what i've read. i'm going to use that strain for my next brew, an english special bitter.

If it's a Baltic Porter, use a lager yeast and lager it.

yeah, i like the whitbread yeasts a lot in english beers. very clean at low temps, and some nice bready flavor. a touch of fruit ester at the higher temps. good yeasts. they'll make a good porter for sure. :rockin:
