Mailing beer/wine/mead to the UK

We all know how difficult it is to do this internally - has anyone ever (legally) shipped to the UK? I'd like to send a bottle of mead to a friend, but don't want either of us to get in trouble for trying to hide it, or have to pay hundreds of dollars in unanticipated fines and import tariffs.

I didn't know where to put this, so "general" beer discussion it is...
