Ok. I was pretty low on my OG reading after brewing a Porter. Recipe called for OG of 1.061. I a got a 1.046. I had about 3 gallons and added 2+ gallons of bottled water and stirred well. I am not sure why I would be so far off. Temp was 66 degrees F when took the reading. Everything else seemed to go fine. Here is the recipe:

6lbs of golden light liquid extract
1.75 lbs Crystal Malt 40L
0.5 lbs Molasses
3oz Fuggles
Used Nottingham yeast

Steeped grains for 30 mins @ 155 degrees
Boiled 60min.

Any ideas why so low?

Thanks for the help!!

Doesn't seem like a lot of extract to me.

It took me probably 11 times to compltete that sentenece. Just as miuch so for teh previous sentence. Too mch GD apfelwen.

Your OG seems okay for 7 lbs exract. Frankly, if you appropriate the proper amount of water, there should br no reason to deviate fromn the inital OG of the recipe. Let i t run; your're fine.

Are you sure you aggravated the primary enough to ensure your SG reading is redunant with the acual reading?
