Current plans are to leave Thursday morning after work and drive to Munising for sex in the Rainbow Falls, then off to Mt Shasta (Anatomy Of A Murder) at Michigamme for early dinner, if they haven't closed again and a walk down to the Devil's Ice Hole at the old mine behind it. Camping at a forest campground on Sturgeon River in the Ottawa National Forest Thursday night. Playing in the forest on Friday at Tibbet's Falls, Canyon Falls, Sturgeon Gorge and Falls, Silver Mountain that evening for sunset and another night camping on the Sturgeon River. Dinner at the drive-in in Baraga, breakfast at the Hilltop in L'anse. Arriving at Camp Lorena Saturday Morning for early beer drinking in the morning, becoming heavy drinking later in the day. Tenting Saturday night and heading home on Sunday.

A pile of quivering flesh for work Monday night.

You make the UP sound so exciting...sex in the falls especially...that never happens up here...

The falls may be nice with the rain lately. I carved my name on the top of Silver Mountain. Let me know if you find it.

Have you considered Bond Falls? You will be in the area. Bond and Canyon have always been in my favorites. Baraga may have a good meal at the Casino if you are not set on the drive-in.

Looking forward to meeting

I'm leaving early in the AM for my vacation and I'll be out of touch for a bit over a week.

If anybody needs specific directions, contact lschiavo- he can help you out. (Is that ok, lschiavo? :D) Otherwise, call my home phone and leave a message. My daughter is staying here (or at the cottage) and she'll call you back if you have any questions about how to get to the cottage. Leave your phone number- we don't have caller ID!

Otherwise, I'll be back around July 5 and I'm looking so forward to doing this. :rockin:

...and you'll be by yourself, right? j/k :D

Still not sure I can convince the wife to spend the weekend with "a bunch of drunks"...

It's not a whole weekend. There's a couple of hours in the morning on Saturday, and maybe a few in the evening on Sunday...

I know what you mean though. My wife is not a very social person, especially with people she doesn't know. Plus she doesn't really drink (once in a while, but not beer) so if it weren't for the fact that she "needs" to take our daughter to MTU, she probably would not be going.

However, I have convinced her that brewdays are even better than the beers festivals that we've been to (IMO anyway). And she does enjoy going to those. As long as there is good food and someone to chat with she will be fine.

Unless I can think of anything better, I'll probably be bringing bacon-wrapped shrimp again. People seem to like it and I can prepare it ahead of time so I only have to throw it on the grill and brush with sauce.

But stuffed pork loin is another possibility. Maybe wrapped with bacon?? It's only 8:00am and I'm hungry!

I would be happy to give directions. I have not even been there yet myself though. The cottage is on Silver Lake right? See...I wouldnt be much help.

The shrimp sounds great. Ever have those bacon wrapped water chestnuts? They seem pretty popular at parties around here lately. Wrap just about anything in bacon is good!

I was thinking of doing a Porketta in the crockpot for sandwiches. The local grocery makes a mean Porketta. My mother made one the other day...I almost forgot how awesome it is.

Anything meat and especially bacon is good with beer. I've tried to come up with some other things, but they just don't seem to hit the spot like meat.

(And that is your free sig quote for the day...)

That sounds great! I'll have Bob do the fish fry, and I can do cole slaw or potato salad. I'll have some IPA in the small kegerator, and I'll ask lschiavo to haul out the trashcan kegerator for kegs. I'll provide ice, of course.

Anybody bringing a dog? No big deal, but I just wanna know in advance if possible. (Kids are ok, too, of course!)

Hopefully we'll have good weather.

by the way, does anybody want to/plan to/consider brewing? So far, everyone says no. Fine with me, but it's kind of a weird brewday if no one brews.

I can take out a whole AG system if we want to brew.

I'd love to brew, but it won't work for me this time. I would not mind brewing with someone else if they want to bring equipment and keep the wort. I just won't have any way to transport wort around while I'm in the UP. If I were coming straight home afterwards I'd be brewing..

I'll brew. With some help of course. Let me know what I should bring. Yooper, we can split the batch unless anyone else wants to take it. Any recipes in mind? I might like an Amber. Its been a while.

Hmmm, an amber does sound good! I have lots of stuff, so if you just want to bring the water, that would probably work. Also, maybe something to work as a brew stand, like a small picnic table or card table. I have everything else. If I provide the grain, I'll crush it first so I don't have to haul the crusher and drill out there. Or, I'll provide the hops and you provide the grain, whichever. Let's come up with a recipe, and we can ALL take credit for it!

It's been raining for three days, but the weather report says it's going to be in the 70s and sunny from Wednesday on!

off topic- are you around today? Bob wants to talk to you about a small job at our house. I'll call your cell.

Oh, and lschiavo, if you can bring your BK and burner, that might be better than mine. Yours is marked for the sized batches we'd do, and mine isn't. Your volume measurements would work better out there. I'll bring a kettle for the heating of sparge water, an extra burner, an immersion wort chiller (it's kind of small, designed for 5 gallon batches), hoses, MLT, HLT, refractometer, etc.

(Bob and I figured out our minor electrical problem- I'll fill you in when I see you.)

OK, things are getting down to the final stages before we set out. Weather permitting, we may be heading out Wed night. We plan to be to the cottage on Saturday morning with just simple tent camping and meals on the road.

We will NOT be bringing Rocky; it would be just a bit too much extra considering our itinerary. He has had a couple big weekends and he really needs the rest. Unfortunately, I will NOT be brewing, either. It's not the gathering up and hauling the gear, it's the time lag to getting back home. We may be blowing off another day in the U.P., which makes wort logistics too cumbersome. It's 8+ hours for us without ANY stopping, and the plan may be that we screw around an extra day while we are in the area, before heading back.

We tried to come up with something that would travel easily and still be damn fine munchies, and the chestnuts wrapped in bacon and drenched in BBQ sauce fits the bill. We also considered beer bread, but with the fish fry and corn bread, that doesn't seem right. We also won't be anyplace where the electric cooler can plug in, so what we bring's gotta maintain liquid integrity, or it's not practical. There goes the lovely marinaded pork loin and things like that.

Where we are staying, 'town' is close to an hour by forest road at moderate speeds, and that entails a party store, gas station, restaurant, and a drive in-really nothing else. There is NO radio in the forest. This is a million acre National Forest with considerable State Forest in and around that. Yooper is maybe 25-30 miles, but half that is good (paved) road.

I'm gettin' keyed! ;)

Yep, we do sort of live in the middler of nowhere. That million-acre National forest is the Ottawa. Until January, Bob was the Supervisory Wildlife Biologist of the forest, and had worked there over 30 years. So, if anybody needs any ideas on fishing, camping, hiking, wildlife viewing, and/or canoeing, Bob would be the go-to man.

Now you guys are giving me the brew bug. I could bring the 20gal BK and an extra MT (if needed) for a 15gal batch? Along with some ingredients of course.

Forgot to add. We plan on leaving Friday morning and hitting a few "points of interest" along the way. Staying the night in Escanaba, where we will visit Hereford and Hops brewpub for dinner and drinks. Then leaving early the next morning to arrive at the cottage 10:30ish - 11ish.

Planning on bringing a dish to pass. No clue what to bring yet. What I do know is that the most important consumable item coming with us will be a keg of Citralicious Pale Ale!!!! :rockin:

Of course you can brew! I have an extra burner, so you can use that. Can you brewing some water in your fermenter, because the water at the cottage is seriously bad. Not bad for drinking- it tastes great. But very heavy iron content, so the beer wouldn't be good. I can haul water out there, too, if you let me know.

We could brew two different beers, or one 15 gallon batch, if you guys want!

Sounds awesome! Can't wait to try your beer and to brew with you.

I don't care what time you come, anytime is fine. I just wanted to point out that we're in Central time zone here, in case you didn't know!

By the way, I'm pretty sure that lschiavo and I are doing this brew: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f66/hoppy-american-amber-malty-american-pale-ale-145402/

I'm going to make the starter at noon today. We're planning a 10 gallon batch, but it won't all fit in the MLT so I've had to change the grain bill just a tad.

I'm hauling some of the brewing stuff out there today. If anybody needs me for directions or questions, I think you have the phone number of the cottage. I'll be staying out there most of the week since it suddenly got about 85 degrees!

I won't be brewing, but I will bring some beer from a batch that I just brewed. I'm going to be camping about 35 miles from your camp Yooper, according to Google Maps. Since camping I thought it'd be easier to just bring some pre-made.

I'm up for 15 gallons. I will provide the 2-row and Munich. I dont have the specialty grains...at least not enough (yooper you have what we need right?). As long as we have the recipe finalized by saturday morining...I will weigh and crush before coming over. Keep me posted.:mug:

Look forward to seeing you and trying another of your beers. The one and only I have tried was great.

Will you have all the brewing "paraphernalia"? I am sure you will set us up but I would hate to get there and no one remembered a thermometer or something.

Yeah, I'll have everything except water and the BKs. You can bring your BK and burner, and the hose that we talked about.

Xiang, do you want to brew this as a 15 gallon batch? Or, rather, two 7.5 gallon batches since both my MLTs will only hold 10 gallons total. Let me know, and I'll crush and bring the hops and specialty grains that lschiavo doesn't have. I only have 8 ounces total of Simpson's Golden Naked Oats, so we'll have to leave out a pound of those if we do this as a 15 gallon batch. Unless you have some of the ingredients and what to bring those (crushed already) from home.

I'll increase the size of the starter, and make sure I have everything.

I'll bring the misc brewing supplies (like the refractometer and thermometers), one 5 gallon MLT/HLT, two 10 gallon MLTs, one burner, hoses, one small kettle (the old turkey fryer) for heating up some sparge water, autosiphon. Anything else?

Just a quick list of what I have for ingredients based on Yoopers recipe if you two want to do a 15gal batch:

  • Maris Otter (if needed)
  • Munich (if needed)
  • Crystal 40 - a bit under a pound I think
  • Crystal 120 - 2lbs
  • Centennial
  • Cascade
  • water (I think I would have room to bring 10gal)

Equipment I could bring:

  • 15gal BK or the 20gal BK
  • 10gal MT
  • burner
  • propane
  • small misc. stuff

If doing a 15gal batch is too much of a pain, I wouldn't have a problem brewing a 5gal batch of something else.

Maybe we could meet up in Escanaba? I planned on staying there as well on Friday night, and hoping to check out the H&H Brewpub. (Although I think my wife may be onto the fact that this trip to take our daughter to MTU is morphing into a beer tour!)

If I can fit it into the jeep, I plan on bringing my brewing kit, which is a smallish toolbox that holds all of my brewing stuff except for my spoon, paddle, and hoses. (Although I am working on making collapsable version of those tools so I CAN pack them in there!). Just to have on hand in case anyone forgets something. But I'm only bringing it if there is room, and I'm not sure yet if there will be (should be...)

Do we have a list of who is bringing what for food? I'd like to bring something else in addition to the shrimp. Does anyone care for dessert? Potatoes?

Homercidal, meeting at H&H sounds good. I will pm you my cell #.....

I'll do "inventory" when I get home. We probably could use some of the hops, but I'm thinking that the grains are covered. I"ll let you know in a little while, once I get back home.

Bring the 20 gallon BK, and the 10 gallon MT. We can use those for sure! I'm certain I have enough burners and propane, so no need to haul that stuff.

I'm really looking forward to this!

Lets do 15 gallons. I think it may actually be easier. We can split the mash and boil in your 20gal kettle. I am planning to bring my Therminator/pump for chilling. What kind of outlet do you have on your kettle? I'm set up with 1/2-in hose barbs to connect the pump. If you have something different we may have to adapt.

I'm heading home in a few minutes. I'll go check the inventory. Let's do 15 gallons of that recipe, minus the Golden Naked Oats of course.

If we do two 7.5 gallon mashes, and combine, we can go with the original recipe just times three. I'll bring out the brewing sheets (I don't have Beersmith on the laptop). Or, can you put Beersmith on two computers? If so, I can download Beersmith to this laptop and we can do it at the cottage.

Lschiavo, Ron called and woke me up this morning. He said that your dad told him that you're out of beer! Not true, is it? :drunk:
