Hi there,

Went on holiday and when came back an insect had died in my airlock. Could have been there between 1 and 7 days. Is this something to worry about? There is pretty much no active fermentation as the mead has been in there fir about 2 months and is close to dry.

Thanks for your help guys

Nothing to worry about at all. If you want, feel free to replace the airlock with a clean one as that won't harm the mead at all and will aid in your peace of mind. Otherwise, you can leave it there with no problems.

It won't drink much.
Kidding! It'll be fine. The bug didn't make it into the beer, so no harm done.

ok but what if you pulled the airlock out and it got sucked in? this happened to me yesterday...
See if you can fish it out then and keep an eye on the batch.

I maintain that if you don't want "it" in the batch, then don't put it in the airlock.

I routinely just make sure that my airlocks ("S" bend/"U" bend type) have enough water in them to be half full and then add half a campden tablet to dissolve. Once the ferment is complete, then I change the liquid for vodka, as that has enough alcohol in it to kill off any insect or germs that might be interested..... You just have to keep an eye on the level as the vodka will evaporate out over time.
