...will it throw off my sight glass calibrations?

I am thinking it will. By as much as a gallon, I wonder?

yep... my 15.5G HLT with a 50 foot HERMS coil plus misc other HW holds 14G. So yea.. it will throw off the measurement.

a 50 foot, 1/2" coil will displace 118 cubic inches, or 0.51 gallons.

the same coil, only 3/8" diameter, will displace 66 ci, or 0.28 gallons.

(1gal = 231c.i.)

This falls inline with my experience. I have a 1/2"x50' HERMS coil attached inside my HLT. I calibrated my sight glass after installation of the HERMS coil and I get right at a 1/2 gallon less total volume in my HLT than I do with my BK.
