Since when is brewing on a "need to" basis? Be careful. Well, have been times when I felt brewing was a "need to" basis, running out!!! That must not happen!!! Must have at least 5 cases of beer at all times! Never know when you'll hit a dry spell and not time/no able to brew. Stock piles... that's the answer... stock piles.... I got close to 5 cases now. Meteorite hits and all hell breaks loose, I got beer.

Dang Bobbi I got at least 14 cases full and 6 gallons in fermenting. I am getting to the point that I need to give a bunch away again. I could stop brewing for a good long time and be fine.

I was thinking as I harvested my yeast last time. I am a yeast cowboy:ban: I need to put my hat on and wear my boots when brewing

Shoot, I've got 14 carboys full. Not even gonna say how much bottled beer I have.

Heck man that blows mine out of the water. I would have more but I have to soak a bunch of labels off the bottles first.

I guess I should brew something that will take months to ferment now so I can drink my stash up.

Sorry you have to take those dang pills. Hell, when my son was born, I had been given drugs and didn't even remember what I named him until the birth certificate came in the mail. Can't believe they even asked me to fill it out at that time, without no one else present to correct me about the name we had chosen. Oh well, my son loves his name. For the first 2 weeks I called him Jeremy, and that wasn't even his name.

I agreed to foolishness after my first child was born, I'm blaming it on the meds. First was the baby's name, and second was agreeing to get married.

Mead or Barleywine?

Been thinking about a mead. I got a ton of honey I can use. I guess I need to go and read in the mead forum though a bit. It will be something I make and give away I think since I do not even enjoy wine. Heck someone gave me a bottle of barley wine and it has sat in the cellar ever since. One of these years I will break it out and try it I guess

 I'm mad too. But at least I forgot what we agreed to and named the baby. Then that guy died. My son never knew him. A tragic accident. I was no where nearby when it happened. He was run over by a subway train and I've never cried about it, well, except cried for my son because he got sad later about never knowing his real dad when he learned about it. :(

Remarried 3 years later and my daughter born within a year. That was better. :p But now fear I'll lose another one, will that make me 2 widows? No, actually, hubby now will just keep getting replacement parts until eventually he is a robot that can live forever.

Isn't life grand? I must brew more beer very soon.

Let's see, two full boxes of new bottles, filled and put back in the case. That's 48. Another 18 in the mini fridge. 6 in the main fridge. 28 more in random small groups. Interestingly enough, that is exactly 100 12oz bottles filled.

I also have 36 750ml bottles that are full.

Then I've got at least 2 gallons of cider in the bottling bucket. That was supposed to go to a friend of mine, but she flaked out and never brought me bottles to fill.

In primary, I've got about 4 1/2 gallons of concord grape wine. I emptied the last bottle from the previous batch last week. So I made a new batch this last weekend.

It should be awesome by the time you do.

If you like a sour, you could always do a mead variant with fruit. Oh, and as far as I can tell, the main reasons you need that long conditioning time with mead is the lack of nutrients in the honey and high fermentation temps that are typical with a mead.

I wish I had the bucket of honey you were talking about. It should be perfect for some really excellent meads after so much time.

Ahh, sitting here enjoying an HB Hefeweizen after finishing brewday cleanup.

I did make an AG BIAB Honey Kolsch, but there was some issues along the way.

1. Paint strainer bag inside the new 44QT Bayou Classic steam pot was not big enough and handle tore holes which allowed grains to escape. Will look at getting either a bigger paint strainer bag, a customer made bag, or some voile cloth.
2. With all the steam coming out of the BK it was hard to tell when the boil started. I think I ended at adding 10 mins to the boil time there.
3. Missed last hop addition so I tossed them in and added 10 min to the boil. So, thats an extra 20 mins added to the boil.
4. Too cold (29* Wind Chill = 14*) to use the immersion chiller and the hose broke as I was struggling to get it untangled. Used rope tub and ice/water batch and still took over an hour and a half to get down to 73*
5. Was shooting for 5.5 Gal in fermenter and because of the additional boil time ended up with only 5 gal.
6. Getting water from the fridge (builtin water filter) takes way too long. Need a portable water filter to speed things up.

Good parts:
  • BIAB Pulley System works great
  • Bucket Heater works great (should have used it last night to get the strike water ready earlier)
  • PreBoil Efficency was 77%.
  • Target OG was 1.062, Actual was 1.060
  • I made BEER!

I think I need another HB.

Should have said, in addition to my 5 cases, got 23 more gallons in fermenters now. Still not enough. Did I ever say what happened with the corn flake, grits, rice and 2-row brew? And just one little bag of hops? No flavor. Can't taste the corn flakes at all. Can't taste much of anything actually. But, heck, it's still beer. Dull, flavorless beer. Still in fermenter so not to late to add something. Oh, can't taste the honey in it either.

I heard that walmart sells voile curtains you can fold in half and sew up the sides. Might try that. I take my sewing machine to my bags all the time as I accidentally burn them and they are getting smaller and smaller.

Good idea. I had heard Walmart or Kmart and then I was going to go bribe my mom. :mug:

Everyone doing ok in here tonight?
Yup, just finished getting the last of my old brews out of screwtops and into cork bottles.

I also bottled 8 more 750ml bottles of that cider, and I still have 3 gallons left.... Ok. I like cider, but holy not that much. I'll have to see if anybody at work has bottles they want filled.

Hmm, I've got 20 gallons of fermentation capacity. If I borrow the food grade buckets I bought for food storage I could manage another 30...

Gonna get really cold again tonight, well, very cold for us. But tonight remembered to plug the block heater up to the truck so it will start in the morning. Gotta bring hubby back to the hospital in the morning for more new parts. Bring it on, life, I'm ready for you now.

We need a good song.

EDIT: Please forget I posted that, forgot a couple of the lyrics.

This is better.

I won't even admit to some of the things I'm fermenting in. This week I plan to get more on the way.

Actually, granddad left behind tons of glass car boy type fermenters he used back in the day. But, I don't think it was beer he was making.

Have you thought about doing some smaller batches? Less risk in experimenting that way, and you have 20 brews available and still have fewer then 200 bottles.

Shiny. :D

I have already started getting away from the 5 gallon kits and doing my own thing. If it can be fermented, I'll probably end up fermenting it. The cheap grain at the feed store.... Hot Florida summers, I think I got a natural malter and I already know know to germinate grain in bulk.

Yep, my last comment was just to Sharona and came from a different person inside me. We're just brewing beer and mead and having fun. :D
Good to hear.. I've been preoccupied lately with finding new work. I've been working here for 13 years so it's scary, but it's time to move on. I've got some amazing prospects ahead of me though, so also exciting.

I had that same problem last year, but on a slightly grander scale ;) there's some cases full you can't see on the floor.

I've thought about it. The climate here is good, and I've got the space. The thing is, I've never had a beer I really enjoy. So, why?

 I've never really had a beer I didn't enjoy. Even without flavor, I like water too, so something in the middle tastes good.

You could grow to trade! This summer, in June, we'll have more blackberries than 10 people can pick in 10 days straight. Blackberry wine. But, don't really care for wine, beer is my preference.

And I'm talking about 12 hour days picking, sun up to sun set. They sold for $25.00 a gallon all day long last year. Hoping for even more growing this year. They grow wild and everywhere you look when they are in season.

When I was in school, I used to get teachers and classmates mixed up if they had the same color/style hair. In the 70s/80s hair was so distracting. Growing up that way ruined me, I blame growing up in the 70s/80s now. Glad now it's less about the hair and more about faces... and bodies. The way it used to be.

The hot tub is ready if anyone wants to strip down and get in.

I could do that I suppose. I'm not sure I'll have time to get much more in the ground this year though. I've got, strawberries, grapes, asparagus, pecans, black walnuts, lilac, and lavender ordered for this year.

I managed to get blueberries, blackberries, and fall blooming crocus in the ground last fall.

I need to build raised beds for the strawberries before they get here too.

With that, fixing up the house, and working 50ish hour weeks, I'm not sure I'll have time for much more.

Dang, it's cold outside!! Better keep your clothes on!

Wishing it was summertime....

Edited: wait, that's an awful track tape.... Need a different song about summer.

I love growing things too. Not even ordering seeds this year though, gonna try my luck with all of last year's extra seed. I'd have to look through the seed packets to list them all. So much to do, so little time.... Know the feeling.

Oh man I should not have brewed. Sore and I suspect looking like a horse rode hard and put away wet....But happy:D

My wife pulls seeds from all the plants we grew from the previous year and plants them. Seems to work pretty good so far.

Sigh I am going to finish this porter and head to bed I think. But I will sleep well knowing that I got more beer a brewing:ban:

My boss is sick and had to come in to work so I'm sitting in the corner like the dunce as far away from him as I can. I think he's going to take off in a couple hours, leaving me all alone to respond. Takes on a whole different level working EMS without a partner. You really rely on citizens with CPR/First Aid training and law enforcement until you can have another EMS unit how up to assist.

I would think you would almost have to have a partner with you. Not from medical knowledge but I watch tv and it takes more than one dude to get the people in the ambulance

Nope one guy is all it takes. I'm a facility EMT on a reservation. We do fire and EMS for the Casino, reservation and surrounding areas. We are able to clear the majority of calls, an only call for an Advanced Life Support rig if we need to. We pull resources from the Sheriff, Tribal Police, and Casino Security if we're alone and need them. It's very rare we're alone though. Maybe 4hrs of a shift once or twice a month.

Well sir I have nothing but admiration for you. Last night I watched a show on the Air Forces Air rescue team and they had to rescue a guy that had his leg blown off. Just keeping him alive to get to the Dr was a amazing feat. I cannot imagine the stress involved.
