When I'm bottling, I'll jog the bottling wand up and down in the wort to get a small sample to taste. You won't draw much with this method though.

I've been using a turkey baster recently, but today I did a 3 gal batch and put it in my 5 gal carboy for primary fermentation. The turkey baster wasn't long enough to reach the liquid level at that point, so I had to lower my hydrometer into the carboy and do the reading directly. Not quite as good.

I guess I'll buy a thief, but it seems kinda stupid since there is nothing to it. I could just get a hard plastic tube from the store and stick my thumb over the top end to hold the sample.
