I got a old tank from a friend when I started brewing. Was now almost empty, I took it to Scott-Gross Co. local welding gas co... The tank test date expired in 1988!. Got 20 LBS CO2 exchanged tanks and Hydro test fee.. Out the door for $55 I feel like that was a great deal!

Echoing what people have said about paying for labor, here's a rundown on what I pay to fill my variety of tanks(minus taxes):
2 lb: $8 (Portable tank for taking one or 2 kegs to parties)
5 lb: $10 (Back yard kegerator)
20 lb: $12 (lagering/carbonating fridge)
50 lb: $20 (primary kegerator)

i pay $29 for 20lbs.
And $24 for $5lbs.
Naturally I mostly use 20 lbs and keep 5lb as a backup.

Here on Oahu 10lbs $60. However I can rent a filled 10lb tank for $8 / month. Renting is not cheaper in the long run. I got the extra tank as a backup for a wedding. Cheap insurance

I went down to the gas store and filled my 2 20 pound tanks last week for the first time in at least 2 years. Prices have gone way up since then, it used to cost $12, now it's $16 for a 20 pound tank.

Hi. I just paid the same ($15.64) for a 10 pound exchange at NexAir in Memphis, but I did get a shiney new AL tank instead of the ugly green steel one! Ed

For whatever reason, CO2 is not cheap in San Diego... if someone has a lead let me know! I pay 30 something for a 10lb swap at WestAir. You get a free fill after 6 fills... but still. AirGas is even more...

WestAir did let me swap a 2.5 lb tank I got off craigslist (for free) for a 10lb tank for free through so that was pretty cool of them. First fill was also half off so I paid about 15 dollars for my 10 lb tank and fill!

I still like and respect them a lot for that, but just can't understand why CO2 is so much more expensive here.

I feel you man. I pay about $20 for s refill of s 5 lb tank at beverage factory. It's close to work and convenient get on my lunch break so I'm willing to pay. But I see I'm getting ripped off pretty big.

Go to a fire extinguisher service shop.
$10 for a 5 lb refill.
Not sure about pricing for bigger tanks, but they are by far the cheapest place I've seen, where my LHBS charges like $20 for an exchange.
