Hey everyone,
I m getting ready to do a 1 gal test batch of some new apple cider i just got and was curious how much of my 11 g red star yeast pack to pitch. Ive never done a small batch and im just not comfy with pitching the whole pack.

You can use 1/5 of the pack, but the problem with that is you should use the rest of the pack within 24 hours or risk the remaining yeast going bad, even if you seal it and refrigerate it.

Using the whole pack on a 1 gallon batch won't hurt anything.

I've actually had an open package of yeast last over a year and they were still alive. Maybe they were just some strong SOB's? But yeah I try to use those up first anyway so I get my $0.50 worth 😉

Anything up to five gallons, just the one packet should be fine. Unless your SG is really high to start, like 1.15, but that shouldn't be a cider issue.
