How do I cause heat on the tongue without burn to the throat?

I am looking to brew an imperial stout and wanted to add some spiciness to it. I want to feel the spice on the tongue rather than the back of the throat. I have read posts about getting the spicy sensation on the back of the throat, but I want the tongue to tingle, not the throat to burn. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It will be a 5 gallon batch.

Have you cooked with white pepper? May be what you are looking for.
