Thinking of taking a 4-5 day trip out of New Jersey with the only goal being to visit as many breweries as possible. I can skip anything here and in the city, and I don't think there's much in CT or RI worth noting (prove me wrong!), so I want to see some stuff in Mass, Maine, Vermont, NH, and maybe upstate NY. I know the obvious ones... Harpoon, Magic Hat, Ship Yard, Long Trail, Boston, etc... anyone done something like this before? Suggestions on the less well known ones? I can obviously google all the breweries out there, so I was hoping someone has done something like this before and had a good itinerary or shoulda, woulda, coulda's...

Cheers!

I hope this doesnt find you too late!
In CT there isnt much, and you will probably want to spend more time elsewhere. Allagash in Portland, ME. Check out Gritty McDuffs if you go downtown portland as well. I did Redhook in portsmouth, NH which was cool with an enthusiastic tour and plenty of samples. The beer was just OK though.

New England brewing and Thomas hooker in ct brew some good beer never been to either brewery though not sure if its worth it. Neb's gohndi bot is great

I went to NEBCO about two weeks ago. Not much of a tour, but you get samples of whatevers on tap as long as it is on tap, and I was chatting with the owner and the brewmaster for like an hour. Pretty cool experience, good beer.

If you make it to the Southcoast of Massachusetts, check out Just Beer in Westport. The beer is ok. The location is beautiful. They have a winery which is where you want to visit. Some very good wines. The brewery is where Pretty Things makes their beer and is just down the street from the winery.

Try some Cape Cod Beer.

Berkshire Brewing Company is great.

Mayflower Brewing and stop at the Plymouth Pebble.

Rock Art Brewery in Vermont is a must stop.

Stop at Sunset Grill in Allston and sample most beers available: http://www.allstonsfinest.com/allstonsfinest/sunsetgrillandtap/sunsetgrill&tap.swf

So many more, too many to list. A good resource: http://www.brewingnews.com/yankeebrew/

If you come from jersey to ny and cross at the tappan zee, stop at captain Lawrence brewery in emsford ny, it's only 5 min from the highway

When you are in Portland you must stop at the Great Lost Bear. It is heaven for craft brewing and a great atmosphere. Oh yeah you can go over to Shipyard Brewing if you want but chances are you will not leave Great Lost Bear. Also, there is a home brew store at the next block. I would almost make a weekend trip to Portland to sit at Great Lost Bear from Charleston, SC.
