Brewed a dead guy ale clone kit this weekend. The kit was extract with about 2.5 lbs of specialty grains, so i took more of a mini-mash approach and worked hard on maintaing 150 degrees mash temp for about 45 minutes. Then strained and sparged prior to moving onto the normal extract additions and hops. The brewing went real good, and final result was an OG of 1.072. The recipe targets an OG of 1.063 - 1.064. So the question is, did my mini mash approach yeild more sugar from the steeping grains, therefore uping my gravity. And would this be considered higher mash efficiency?
