I just built a 1440w heat stick.

On the initial test I submerged the element and rested it on my thermometers probe.

The water temp started out at 100°

After a minute of the element touching it, it read 60°

It stays 40° cooler throughout the entire range.

Any ideas why this happened?

Thermometers, per my limited understanding, have metal strips in them- excessive heat likely warped or even melted the strips. I know some are adjustable, but my guess is yours is fried.

Mine is adjustable. I'm going to do a frozen to boil test on it to see if it really is shot.

I'll post the results.

I really love the combination heat stick/induction plate. It gets 7 gallons boiling in 45 minutes.
