Does anyone have a recommendation for a thermometer? I want one to put in my mash tun (with the lid closed) so I can monitor my initial and final temperature during my mash.

I have one of these that I like a lot:

It is traceable lab calibrated and can also be user calibrated if necessary. It will accept any type "k" thermocouple. You can buy a variety of different types of thermocouple probes for cheap. Ebay is a good source for the thermocouples if you want a different style. I like the bare junction type which happily are the least expensive ones.

Now then, if you really want to do yourself a service, get one of these as well:

My Easy-Read glass lab thermometer is the only one that I trust completely. It's my benchmark for checking my other thermometers. It's a bargain at only $12 + shipping.

Except the short probe Thermapen won't work very well for the OP's application. He wants to monitor the temps with the mash tun lid closed.

My bad, I missed that, there are plenty of options on the Thermoworks site, like the type k thermocouple thermos.

Good Luck!
