Somebody's Response:
No a couple of those still aren't on Netflix but they were worthy enough to note since you can get them other places like Hulu, On Demand, etc. The majority of those shows however are on Netflix.

Me: why include non-"Netflix" titles on a Netflix thread.
You have no idea how long it took me to perform this simple mashed up response on my Kindle Fire. Text manipulation is not a strong suit. I toughed it out though. So there. Have a good night everybody.

I watched the first two episodes of Sons of Anarchy based on opinions in this thread. Darn, I'll try a couple more, but it's looking like a girly soap opera with bikes at the moment. :(

It is a man's soap opera if such a thing exists. Every episode is pretty full throttle with beatings and killings though so it makes up for it.

I'd like to get the hours that I wasted on that series back. When I look back at it, it's terrible writing/acting disguised by gratuitous violence.

I really like the trig character.

Game of Thrones is a fantasy soap opera. SoA is a biker soap opera. Gotham and Flash and Arrow and Agents of SHIELD are comic book soap operas. Walking Dead is a zombie soap opera. Burn Notice is a spy soap opera. Battlestar Galactica is a spaceship soap opera. Homeland and 24 are counter-terror soap operas. If you're watching scripted or "reality" TV (and often even news and talk shows), you're almost certainly watching melodrama.

Sooo, can you recommend any non-soap operas?

It's actually pretty clever compared to what would be "man" shows 15 years ago. I don't watch most of the shows you listed, about half of them I do. If you watch Game of Thrones (the book series is almost the same in this aspect) there is *not* a lot of fighting. It IS on the other hand A LOT OF PEOPLE standing around talking about who theyre gonna kill and how, which is basically a soap opera.

Not that I am complaining, I love the books, and the TV show SWMBO likes (though complains about because she wants all the bad guys dead). It's really clever though because, women will like it because there isn't just a bunch of sword fights all the time (game of thrones), or just zombie gore violence 100% of the time: this is in no way meant to sound sexist, but from the standpoint of being a commercial success shows like GoT, Walking Dead, and such, are wildly successful because they get the male audience interested because theres boobies/violence/swords/guns/zombies, then they have actual decent to semi-decent dialogue and character interactions that don't involve cutting their head off.

This I realized while I was about 75% the way through a 25oz bottle of strawberry cyser while watching Game of Thrones. Watching 4 seasons and not realizing its a man soap opera is pretty god damn clever.

Yeah, I wasn't complaining either. I named only shows that I have watched a significant amount of (and skipped a bunch that I would be ashamed to add to the list). Soap operas are famous for distilled melodrama, but almost any other scripted or reality TV show is pulling the same tricks to keep you interested, just not as blatantly and with a bit more substance in between. There's nothing wrong with that; it's more interesting to watch the Sons battle ever-badder and -well-connected bad guys from one season to the next than it would to watch them robbing liquor stores and holding meetings to discuss club dress code. I made the comment in the first place because it tickled me to see someone describing SoA as a soap opera, as if anything else they're watching isn't. I don't mean to defend any one show or bash down all shows, I like a lot of TV shows and I watch a number with my wife that I don't care for that much but still tolerate (Grimm, Arrow, Flash, etc.), and to each his or her own.

While you are discussing soap operas..... My little girls like the mako mermaid shows on Netflix. Disney has got the next generation trained to love the melodramatic....

Missed thie reply earlier. I watch or have watched all of the shows that I listed and generally enjoyed most of them, although there are a number of them that I would skip if my wife didn't control the remote. I wasn't meaning to bag on any shows, just pointing out that it's a bit silly to call Sons of Anarchy a soap opera if you're watching other scripted TV, because it's pretty much all melodrama. Nothing wrong with that; it makes for good entertainment.

I didn't mean to come off as attacking you, I was just meaning to support your position. I think its pretty comical as well because SoA sounds like a perfect example of a Man-Opera.

Maintaining interpersonal relationships with your social group, with a patina of extreme violence. It's an equation that obviously works.

It's a similar theory to my theory about the movie 300.

Next time you watch, think about the fact that 90% of the movie is slow motion scenes of topless men in capes with leather underwear shoving their spears into other men... (you are meant to believe its a really manly violent movie but it's almost *all* eye candy for women)

The Babadook was scary. I rarely say that about a horror flick. Job well done.

"you can't get rid of The Babadook"

Babadook keeps popping up on my Netflix but the name just sounded too silly for me to watch it. Guess I'll have to now haha. I just finished season 9 of trailer park boys.. oh god what a great show

I just finished episode four of Daredevil and I'm loving it so far. Trailer Park Boys is hilarious, stupid fun. I also enjoy all of the ESPN 30 for 30's with my favorites being the Bo Jackson, Fab 5 and the U documentaries.

BABA... DOOK DOOK DOOK

I want to rent The Babadook on Blu-Ray and listen to it on a nice surround sound system, they definitely did a fantastic job with the sound in this movie. Definitely watch it by yourself, at night, while drinking some strong beer.

Gilmore Girls.... There, it's been said; let the ridicule begin.

Gilmore Girls is fine. No risk of embarrassment for that one.

Just don't try to get your husband to watch! It's not a guy's show. Probably best to watch over a couple of glasses wine with your lady friends.

Some people take a throwaway phrase like "Girly soap opera" way too seriously. I just thought SOA was crap. I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition! (Just as nobody expects it) ;)

I'm no fan of SOA. I'm not much into dramas.

Battlestar Galactica was my main drama.

I should find out where we left off on Castle. I found that to be an interesting and humourous "Not-really-a-mystery-murder-mystery-slash-comedy-drama".

I felt the cast, while not really unique to the genre, worked well together with the plots.

Still haven't seen his daughter get kidnapped, but I'm sure it's happened. Kind of a given at some point in the series.

Wifey loves Castle. It's just too cute for me, though: after Firefly, Nathan Fillion is going to make anything he's in a bit too Whedony for my preferences.

I too have watched Gilmore Girls. Throwback to college and dating SWMBO...... She now is binge watching Parenthood. I watch about every 5th episode with her.

Need a movie to watch this morning. I'm at work (it's ok to watch Netflix here, long story, but no porn). Less than 2 hours, non horror, not slap stick. Go!
