The title says it all. I lost a flash drive with all of my work for the last 5 years, my beer recipes, and pretty much a library of .pdf files that I will have to go and re-download. Oh... and the beer recipes/pdf files weren't backed up.

Did you actually misplace it, or did it die?? I have software that "might" be useful for recovering files on a drive that doesn't read properly. Not sure how it works on a a damaged drive, but I recovered a whole thumb drive that I accidentally formatted.

Thumb drives are good for backing up important data from the Hard Disk, and the Had Disk is good for backing up data from a Thumb Drive...

Wow, I feel for you.. I lost a drive that had all my pictures from vacations, of cars I had owned, pictures from back when my wife and I first met etc. after that happened I began backing everything up on an external drive, I also back up some info onto DVDs, so there is a physical copy of all my photos, recipes, registration info for programs, and so on. It takes time and can get tedious, but I know my data is safe.
If you actually lost it or it was corrupted, it really sucks when you lose all that data.

I burn everything to DVD. Never trust a hard drive, they'll crash. Never trust a memory stick, you'll leave it at a brew day somwhere and someone else will overwrite your files with porn.

I have 3 copies of my brew software and recipies on RW-DVD's, and still feel at risk! :D

Eh. I keep my stuff on stick too, but I usually print out the brewsheet and keep it in a file. It doesn't matter, because I don't keep good notes and you know the small details can sometimes make all the difference in brewing.

Frankly, I'm surprised I haven't lost my stick somewhere.

pure gold!

it sucks to lose data, but the way i figure it: if my house burned down, what could i NOT live without, and will it fit inside my gun vault's 60 minute space?

i must say cd or dvds of any recordable format are invaluable in these situations; when you make a back-up, you will NEVER need it!

'Digital media doesn't exist until it's in more than one place.'

how many times have you plugged it into a computer? Why didn't you just copy it over?

That being said, my iphone crashed and my brewpal software wasn't backed up correctly. I lost all my recipes. Now I email myself every recipe and print it out.

Sorry for your loss. Maybe you lost it somewhere that it could turn up again? I lost a set of car keys for quite a while and they turned up in the couch. I also lost a usb key once and it turned up shredded in a friend's recliner mechanism, you never know.

Next time post all your recipes on HBT and we'll keep backups for you :)

Also sorry for your loss. I'll echo a previous poster - get Its been the best online service outside of gmail I have ever used. PM me if interested and I'll send you an invite.
