Blow-off, not blow-up! Haha, this is my 4th batch and in my previous batches I've used fermcaps during the boil to prevent boil over. Well, I discovered that I get a hot break when I boil my first running. I collect my first running's into my brew-pot and start the flame to save time. Much more room in the pot and don't have to worry about boil-over. Anyway, because of this, I didn't add any fermcaps. I was brewing my second AG Celebration Ale and racked on top of my first ones yeast cake. Oh boy, what an aggressive and quick fermentation. Pictures were as follows (in order):
Yay, got it racked! 10 minutes in.

30 minutes in, looks beautiful (yes, started to ferment already!)

Still @ 30, aggressive fermentation!

50 minutes in, blow-off tube time (1/2 inch tube connected to airlock)

This thing is like a hot tub w/ full jets!

Awesome stuff.

Thats awesome man. My recent batch did the same thing, it was entertainment for hours and hours and lots of drinking giggles. =D

Its awesome to see nature at work!

My only question is whether or not there is a chance that you could end up with sanitizer in your carboy, since the blow-off bucket is above the carboy?

Haha, not with how aggressive this fermentation is. Once it settles down in a day or two, I'm going to put the airlock back on.

Yeah I just made a big beer with the yeast cake from a 2487, and the new beer took off within a couple hours and was nicely churning and spewing the next day. Was only about 3 days until I could put the airlock in and relax. Now it is about 80% done fermenting, hoping to get another few points out of the SG.

You just have a siphon waiting to happen is all.

Id set the sanitizer bottle on the ground, that way any suction has to overcome gravity, rather than having it there to help out.

Unfortunately that siphon is the only one I have that fits into my airlock and I've no other way to attach a blow off tube to my carboy right now. That siphon is only 12 inches long and can't reach to the floor, I tried; it's too tough and just pulls the airlock out if bent at all. I'll probably just attach the airlock and remove the siphon now, instead. Thanks for the heads up! :mug:

I think he's saying that you might potentially CREATE a siphon since it's higher than the carboy.

I have a blow-off every single time I brew; am I the only one?

That's funny because I've only had 2 total over 30+ batches. One was a 1.100 barleywine pitched on a US-05 cake and the other was S-04 pitched into a brown ale. The barleywine makes sense, but I still am not sure what happened w/ the brown ale. I've used S-04 several times w/o even coming close to needing a blowoff.
