Tasting Notes
Velvety. Roasty, hints of coffee and chocolate. Balanced.
Brewed this Memorial Day 2013 with my dad, getting him into the hobby. In honor of Memorial Day, I named this after the famous Irish battalion of the American Civil War. Anyways, enough history, here's the brew. I wanted something very simple, using traditional ingredients. The result was DELICIOUS. Unfortunately, we only were able to enjoy half of the batch, because our hometown suffered a bad flood during the summer, and the 4 feet of water that entered our basement happened to ruin the rest of my bottles of this:

Type: All-grain
Estimated brewhouse efficiency: 70%
Pre-Boil Volume: 6.66 gallons
Batch Size: 5.25 gallons
Estimated Abv: 4.17%
Target OG: 1.042
Estimated FG: 1.011
IBU: 37
SRM: 34
Yeast: Wyeast 1084 Irish Ale Yeast
Yeast Starter: None (activator pack)
Total Water Needed: 8.8 gal
Mash Water. 3.33 gal
Sparge water: 5.5 gal
Strike Temp: 163 F
Pre-boil Wort: 6.66

Grains:
6.0 lbs Marris Otter Pale Malt
2.0 lb Flaked barley
14 oz. Roasted barley
big ol' handful of rice hulls

Mash for 60 minutes at 151* F. Strike water 163F.

Sparge with 170* F water to achieve pre-boil volume of 6.6 gallons. Boil for 90 minutes.

Hops:
1.5 oz. UK Kent Golding leaf (6.6 AA) 60 minute

This puppy was so smooth. The roasted barley tasted great, but its harshness was completely rounded out by the flaked barley. From simple recipes, great beer often comes. This beer was a testament to that notion. Let me know if you brew it, with or without your own changes, I'd love to hear your feedback!
