I can't remember if I buy my edamame seeds from Gurney's or Burpee, but you should be able to find some at one of those places online. Get that ordered now. I am planting this weekend.

I just stumbled on to a University of Illinois site where they have free sample packs of Hybrid Soy bean seed. Sent my email request and am hoping to see some seed soon.

My sons adore snacking on Edamame and whats a better deal than growing them myself.

"The University of Illinois has research plots of edamame each year. The National Soybean Research Laboratory has a limited quantity of 30- to 50-seed packets of several Gardensoy varieties available freeof-charge to gardeners wishing to try the crop. For information on research trials and/or to receive Gardensoy seed packets, contact Research Specialist Theresa Herman.

Could someone PM me the e-mail address for the edamame seeds. Every time I tap on it it opens in my e-mail program, but the e-mail gets bounced back to me as a bad address so I think it's converting it wrong. If someone could PM the e-mail address that would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, my "Citizen Agronomist" package showed up with about twice as many seeds as I needed. Planted 3 of the research varieties next to my Burpee-ordered edemame variety this weekend.

Just got my edamame beans ordered.
They are sending 2 var. So we shall see how they go in the Pacific NorthWest.

As for derailing the thread,
I have an idea that i am going to try when the beans get going.
Miracle Grow. Maybe do 1/2 of each kind. I think it would be interesting just to see how much miracle grow does make a differnce.:)

Several of us have gotten on the Edamame gardening kick thanks to a seed program from the University of Illinois. I have started this thread as a repository for anyone desiring to share notes and discusssion about growing these plants.

Struggled to decide between DIY and this place but figured that since Edamame is a popular appetizer pairing with beer that here would be appropriate.

I received 14 packets of seed. 2 packets each of 7 varieties. I have yet to fully prepere the beds for them as I have only just sprayed to kill off the Bermuda grass that is thatched above where these will rest. I full intend to sow all 7 varieties in various spots as I have a rather large back yard with lots of Full Sun areas available. I am eager to get these seed sowed as my children absolutely love snacking on Edamame. I can only hope that the boys get them before the critters do.

Good god. I got a whopping 3 packets. 1 each of 3 varieties.

I just asked her to send whatever she reccommends for my Zone. and told her how much area I have to work with. 6000 square foot back yard. Of which I have plotted 168 square foot for Edamame.

I live to be out in the yard so, it's all the more reason to be out there. And, as long as I am out there it keeps my children from Zoning out on Wow, Wow, Wubbzy and maybe, just maybe, instills some respect for plants.

I just went and emailed the lady yesterday and she is sending the packets today. I look forward to trying a new crop but dont have too much space in the garden to grow more food.

Look like plain old soybeans, what makes them special enough to have their own name?

Edamame is the Japanese word for the food item in the way it is prepared.

Fettucini are just noodles too.

The varietals selected for Edamame are chosen for the plumpness of the actual beans and are described as being 50 to 100% larger than commerical soy but only producing about 80% of the yield.

Thank You too Yooper for merging threads that went OT from the another topic.

This one reads kinda Yoda (finishes before it starts) like now but the topic is consistent.

Thanks for posting the link - I sent an email yesterday and the seeds are on their way today. Can't wait to get these in the ground - gonna have to wait a while - we've had frost warnings all week. Not right, especially after getting a sunburn at my daughter's soccer game two weeks ago. Stupid New England weather.....
