I'm doing lots of research, and when i get my equipment later this month im going to be ready to go (until something doesn't happen like the book says it does!) Right now im looking at the kits from Northern Brewer and Midwest. I was going to go with the one from northern, because there is one quasi-local to me. But it seems like midwest has way better prices. Can some of you smart people tell me the advantages and problems of one of these kits over the other? Thanks!!

Don't bother buying something that has 2-5 gallon carboys. Sure, they look nice...but at a 5 gallon size, it's only going to be worth it if you're using secondary fermentation a ton. You'll quickly learn on these boards that secondary isn't necessary and you should just use the extra vessel for another beer. If you want something with a carboy, I suggest looking for a 6.5 gallon carboy. Personally, I prefer plastic, but the carboys are easy to clean and look pretty. They're a pain to move though...

Forget the kits dude
If you're just starting out, get a 3+ gallon stock pot (around $15), a stainless steel spoon ($5), some hop/grain bags ($10 total), hydrometer ($5), airlock (1) and a fermenting bucket (13)
You could brew for less than $50.
Even less if you already have a stock pot and spoon.
