Back sweetening and gravity readings

Could anyone enlighten me on the protocols for taking grav readings for back sweetening. Is the reading taken before adding the honey? Is the original readings disregarded completely? Not really sure how it works.

Yep. Take a reading before sweetening and decide how sweet you want it to be then add sugar (or honey or whatever) to bring it up to that point. Your initial gravity is only useful for calculating the alcohol content.
