Apfelwein question

I have got a 1 gal apfelwein fermenting and have not done one before.
It seems to be working, but have noticed the smell was not of fragrant apples but of a nasty fart.
I used Red Star Montrochet, apple juice and dextrose, basically Edwort's Apfelwein.

Is the rank smell normal or should I be concerned?

That's the normal smell of that yeast. It will dissipate when fermentation is complete, nothing to worry about.

That smell is what is collectively known around here as "rhino farts". Its perfectly normal with that yeast.

Yeah, that's normal. Adding a small amount of (pasteurized) yeast nutrient before pitching may help.

next time some yeast nutrients will keep the yeast from doing some of that, it will still smell, but not nearly as much.
