I made Ed Worts recipe Bavarian Hefeweizen yesterday. The brew went great and I transferred into a 5 gallon fermenter bucket. Tonight I noticed my placed smelled a little to much like fermentation. At high krausen it blew through the airlock.

My question is do I need to replace the airlock on the top of the fermenter now that it has frothy gunk all through it? Does this pose risk for infection? Thanks.

You can safely pull it off, and clean it before re-installing. Fermenting beer gives off plenty of CO2 and will keep the nasties out. If it's still coming out the top you might need to rig a blow-off.

Do I need to make sure and sanitize before sticking the air lock back into the grommet hole?
