After my first AG I had two problems. 1) I didn't preheat my tun well enough and way off on mash temp. 2) Bad efficiency 58%.

Today I did AG batches 2 and 3.

To tackle 1) I heated my strike water about 10F higher than needed and let it equilibrate, that worked nicely, even in the 30 degree weather. Thanks to those who suggested that.

To tackle 2) I know I needed to use higher temperature water for my sparge. Today on both batches I did two equal sized sparges. So I drained the mash wort and then split the sparge into two equal batches and used sparge water in the mid 170sF. This took my efficiency (58% on my first AG) to 86% and 78% on batches 2 and 3. I think most of this is to increasing the temperature of my sparge water.

Thanks to all for advice in other posts. And let this be a +1 to higher sparge temps = better efficiency!
