ive read about boiling hops into the water used to dissolve the priming sugar for bottling. i have a porter i brewed that did not wind up the color i expected. can i steep some black patent malt in a cup or two of water before i dissolve my sugar in it? my only concern is adding more sugar by adding the grains, but really dark malts dont have any fermentable sugar left right?

Shouldn't add sugars, no. But might it create more stuff to settle out in the bottle?

If you just want colour adjustment, maybe use a bit of gravy browning in the bottling bucket?

If you haven't done this already, and you have some time, I would suggest ordering some sinamar. It contributes a bit of flavor, but it appears to be black as the very night. That's something that you're looking for it seems.

You can buy it from morebeer, and probably other places.
