The washer that holds the gas release into the cover fell into the primary about 3 days in. The yeast was working overtime, it seems. The cover was bulging out, beer spilled everywhere. When I went to adjust the gas release, the rubber washer fell in, and it sank.

Is this going to ruin the batch? I was going to let it sit a few more days and then move it to a secondary.

Nah, leave it. It'll be fine. In fact, you can leave it there for an extended primary and skip the secondary, if you want.

In the meantime, look up blowoff tubes. It's a way to keep the yeast/krausen in check when it gets really active like that.

Awesome, thanks. I wasn't going to use a secondary at all, but thought maybe it would help, so this is good news. I put a plastic bag in between the valve and cover in attempt to make it somewhat airtight.
