I don't know if anyone has ever made any real progress building these... I love the idea of basically using a giant mesh coffee filter...

I saw this company that sells custom stainless mesh baskets of any size and shape you need...

http://anysizebasket.com/design.asp#details

for my pot it came out to..

Basket Pricing
Part #: TMT-180RND180-C30S
Dimensions: Diameter: 18" Height: 18"
Handle: C-Swinging Round Loop Handle, Handle Height=1/2 Basket Width
Mesh: 30 Mesh x .012'' Woven Wire (.021'' Openings, 40% Open Area)
Material: 304 Stainless Steel
Est. Weight: 10.7 lbs.

Qty Unit Price
1 or 2 pcs $235.00

Seems pricey but its the closest I've seen to a working version... they are said to hold 60lbs hanging.

Looks like you picked the right mesh size, or at least what I would pick as well.

These guys...

http://www.sterlingfilter.com/round.html

also seem to stock an 18" x 18" round basket in the same mesh.

I fired off an email to see what the costs are... may be less if they are on the shelf...

I got an email back from the stainless basket company...

"Jeff,
Our 304 stainless steel basket would work just fine for the brew application. Some question below.

Quantity of baskets

Are you going to be putting a lid on the pot with the basket inside?

Weight of grains"

I'm curious to see where this goes!

I use a perforated steamer basket and a voile bag. The basket gives me a solid shape that's easy to move and control. The voile provides the clean filter. Total was about $96.

I was tired of the bag being a shapeless hot mess, but I wasn't ready to put $200+ into a basket. I'm happy with my compromise.
