Does it matter how the pump is mounted? Does having the impeller facing the floor effect the performance?
 
I have mine mounted with the impeller face mounted out and the discharge outlet at the top.
 
Yup like Phunhog, you want to rotate your pump head 90 degrees so that the inlet is at the bottom and the outlet with a ball valve is on the top. This allows air bubbles to escape from inside the head of the pump.
