Last batch I did a hop stand throwing .5oz of Simcoe in at flame out and cooled, aerated, pitched, sloshed-around as normal. I left the hops in there during the 5 day fermentation, the garage stairway smelled amazing. I strained the hops by means of using a grain bag around my siphon when racking to secondary. It was in secondary for almost 5 weeks. The aroma is still wonderful.
Does anyone do this normally? Are there any drawbacks t leaving leaf hops floating for the fermentation period? I just bottled and it seems to taste and smell Ok at worst, great at best, but I am biased.
TIA

Some ppl say its ok, some say it isn't. If I had a choice, I would try to keep it out of my fermentation, but its not an option for some. I think in your case, you are fine, esp since you said your beer smelled and tasted great!
